Lip Blushing Aftercare

What is the healing process and aftercare consist of?

Day 1 (Day of Procedure)

Immediately after, gently blot the area with a clean tissue to absorb excess lymph fluid. Do this every 5 minutes for the full day until oozing has stopped.  Removing this fluid prevents hardening of the lymph.  Sometimes the lips can bruise even after the procedure. Bruising will subside within 24 hours post procedure. Apply provided healing ointment as needed to keep lips moist.  A cold compress can be applied to help with swelling if needed.

Night of procedure: very delicately wash the treated area with an unscented antibacterial soap, such as Cetaphil, and lukewarm or cool water. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. With a qtip, apply a very thin layer of the provided healing ointment. Never apply ointment to damp or wet tattooed areas. Use a makeup wipe or washcloth for the rest of your face, avoiding the treated area.

Please be advised it is a good idea to brush your teeth with plain water ONLY for 72 hours and avoid using whitening toothpaste post treatment.

Day 2-10

Lips will feel swollen and very chapped after your treatment. Keep the skin moist at all times, do not let the lips dry out. Continue to apply ointment throughout the day. Again, DO NOT let the lips dry out.

During Day 1 to Day 10 (or until the scabs are gone)

*Please Avoid:

  • Water on the treated area (do not get the lips wet, besides cleaning them)
  • Makeup on the treated area
  • Excessive sweating
  • Sauna
  • Pools
  • Sunbathing
  • Spicy, oily, salty, and acidic food (cut food into tiny bite size pieces)
  • Alcohol
  • Kissing

*DO NOT pick the dry lips.

*Do not apply anything besides the provided healing ointment (no Vaseline, antibiotic creams, Polysporin etc). Following the procedure, do not use creams that contain acids or ingredients that will lighten or exfoliate the skin.

*Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water (through a straw is best).

*Keep your lips as clean as possible by blotting lips with a damp cotton round as needed (such as after eating).

*At about day 14-29, color “blooms” from within more and more each day. This is the process of the hydrating elements in the pigments being dispersed throughout the body and leaving natural pigment on the inside of the lip tissue.

*Lips heal in three stages: Too dark, Too light, Just right.

Full healing is complete within 4-6 weeks. After that, your final color and shape can be assessed and touched up if necessary. Often, even with proper care, clients may lose pigment in areas or heal unevenly. This is absolutely normal and is the reason why a perfecting session 6-8 weeks later is included.

HOW LONG WILL MY SEMI-PERMANENT COSMETICS LAST?

  • Cosmetic tattooing is designed to fade over time. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, age, metabolism, medications, and pigment color all affect the longevity of the tattoo. The sun and some kinds of lighting (tanning beds) can affect the rate at which these pigments are broken down.
  • To take care of your lips, follow the aftercare instructions and touch up your lips every 12-18 months (as needed). Touch ups are normal and expected for permanent cosmetics.
  • Please note that final results vary and cannot be guaranteed due to the nature of lip tissue as it heals. A follow-up (“perfecting”) appointment is recommended at 6-8 weeks where we can assess your pigment retention and make any changes necessary.
  • Touch ups are suggested once a year in order to keep the color and shape fresh and vibrant.

WHAT FACTORS WILL AFFECT MY SEMI-PERMANENT COSMETICS?

  • Smoking: Smokers may notice that their semi-permanent cosmetics will fade faster.
  • Anemia and iron deficiency: Your body will absorb iron based pigments more quickly.
  • Sun Exposure: Increased exposure to the sun will cause premature fading. You will want to use sunscreen (35+spf) for your semi-permanent cosmetics.
  • Age and Metabolism: The faster your metabolism, the faster the pigment will fade.
  • Bleeding During the Procedure: Excessive bleeding during your procedure will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. While this is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow pre-procedure instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications, alcohol, and caffeine 24 hours before your procedure.

DO SEMI-PERMANENT COSMETICS HURT?

  • Topical 5% lidocaine is used to make you comfortable during your semi-permanent cosmetic procedure. However, pain tolerance varied from client to client. Having the procedure during your menstrual cycle may increase your sensitivity.

YOU CANNOT RECEIVE SEMI-PERMANANT COSMETICS IF YOU ARE:

  • Pregnant/breastfeeding (need MD consult)
  • Are currently using Accutane or have used Accutane within the past year (need to be off it for 1 year)
  • Have freshly tanned/sunburned face (Must wait for it to clear)
  • Are on blood thinning medications or antibiotics (Must stop usage for a few days prior to procedure)
  • Are currently undergoing cancer/chemo treatments(must be off chemo or radiation for at least 6 months)
  • Diabetic (need MD consult)
  • Keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Autoimmune Disease (need MD consult)
  • Heart Disease of any kind (need MD consult)

DO I NEED A TOUCH-UP/FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT?

  • Yes, permanent cosmetic procedures generally require 2 (sometimes 3) sessions. During your 6-8 weeks follow-up, we can assess your pigment retention and make any adjustments needed. This follow-up also increases the longevity of your semi-permanent cosmetics.

DO I NEED A CONSULTATION BEFORE GETTING SEMI-PERMANENT COSMETICS?

  • If you have specific questions or concerns, you are welcome to message Nails and Lash Studio Facebook page or call/text 720-252-2367. We book enough time to discuss your needs and wants at the initial appointment.
  • If you are in need of correction work or have had your lips tattooed elsewhere, you will need to send a photo BEFORE booking. This way we can schedule the adequate amount of time needed.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

  • Initial appointments take about 2.5-3 hours. This includes a consultation with the PM artist, before and after photos, color matching, lip shaping, and actual procedure.
  • Follow-up sessions take about 1.5-2 hours.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?

  • IMORTANT:  If you have ever had cold sores in the past, no matter how long it has been since you have had an outbreak, you must get a prescription (Valtrex) from your doctor to prevent an outbreak. Please take the medication at least 5 days prior to the appointment and continue until at least 5 days after the procedure.
  • Even if you have never had a history of cold sores, there is a small chance it may occur after lip blushing due to trauma to the lips.  For clients with no history of cold sores, we recommend taking L-Lysine 1000mg at least 5 days prior to and 5 days after the procedure. **Please consult with your doctor before taking.**
  • If you have reference lip color pictures, please feel free to bring these to your appointment along with the lip pencil or lip stick that you like.
  • You will need to avoid water for 7-10 days after! This includes excessive sweating, pools, lakes, salt water, and extreme sun exposure, so plan your vacations accordingly!
  • We recommend to do lip blush first then do lip fillers. Please wait 6 weeks after the touch up session to do lip filler.
  • If you already have lip fillers done, please wait at least 6 weeks before doing your lip blushing. Clients who have had lip fillers done recently tend to experience a little more sensitivity/swelling when getting lip blushing done.
  • Do not tan two weeks prior or have sunburned face/skin.
  • Do not take Fish Oil or Vitamin E one week prior (natural blood thinners).

Day of appointment:

  • Do not work out the day of your appointment.
  • You should not take any medications that may thin your blood (i.e. Aspirin, Ibuprofen) 72 hours before or immediately after your procedure.
  • Do not drink alcohol within 24 hours of your procedure
  • Avoid caffeine for 12 hours before your procedure. (Caffeine increases blood flow and will affect your healed results.)
  • Drink lots of water- before and after the session – this allows the skin to accept the ink more easily, without thinning the blood.
